guidewires
In PCI guidewires, there are broadly two types:
◆General lesion guidewires
◆CTO lesion guidewires
→General lesion guidewires have lower penetration force, making them safer and less likely to cause perforation even with somewhat rough handling.
→On the other hand, CTO lesion guidewires are designed with higher penetration force compared to general lesion guidewires. They are valuable for penetrating CTO lesions but carry a higher risk of perforation, requiring careful handling.
Three types of general lesion guidewires:
>First choice wire
→The first and most commonly chosen wire.80% of lesions can be navigated with this wire.
>Polymer-coated wire
→It is more slippery than the first choice wire. Therefore, caution is needed to avoid perforation in the periphery.
>Support wire
→A special wire used to extend the vessel or navigate through tortuous paths to deliver devices to the lesion site.
There are broadly two types of guidewires for CTO lesions:
>Tapered wires
→These are guidewires with needle-sharp, pointed tips, designed to penetrate CTO lesions by piercing through them like a needle. In many CTO cases, tapered wires are frequently used.
>Heavy tip load wires
→These guidewires are designed with a rigid tip, providing several times the penetration force of general lesion guidewires.
